Welcome to Cannon Falls! Our city
is located at the junction of the Big
Cannon and Little Cannon rivers on the
northern edge of Goodhue County, on Hwy.
52…halfway between Minneapolis-St. Paul and
Rochester. In historic times, Native Americans
and traders frequently hid their canoes near
the rivers’ mouths, away from the heavily
traveled Mississippi River. Because of this, the
French fur traders named the stream “Riviere
aux Canots” or River of Canoes. Easterners,
hearing the French pronounce “canots,”
thought they were saying cannon, and the
Cannon River it became. Zebulon Pike, the
famous explorer mentions the Cannon River
in his journals. Our town is named after the
river and the falls, a natural cascade along the
Little Cannon River. In 1853, father and son,
Richard and William Freeborn, traced the
Cannon River upstream to its falls. The two
explorers kept their find a secret until they
could return a year later to stake a claim. The
city was settled in 1854. It is the only city in
the world named Cannon Falls.

Cannon Falls was settled in 1854 and became famous
for its many water-powered flour mills. The Village of
Cannon Falls was incorporated in 1874. This guide book
will direct you to many historic landmarks as well as
newer attractions.

We can’t wait for you to experience Cannon Falls.
We are uniquely named as we are the only Cannon
Falls in the entire world, and we are strategically
placed between the Twin Cities, Rochester, Red Wing,

Five miles west of Cannon Falls, Phillippo
Scout Reservation, and its 498 acres of rolling
fields, wooded campsites and hills, overlooks
the beautiful Cannon River Valley. With easy
access to both the Cannon River and Cannon
Valley Bike Trail, the camp is an ideal launching
point for a long distance trip. Since its
opening in 1964, the camp has proved an ideal
host for events of all sizes. The property is
even conveniently divided into an upper and
lower level so that two large events can occur

Friendship Point overlook on your next visit.

Falls Fire Hall, the museum
building is on the National
Register in one of the nation’s
oldest surviving fire halls.
The museum highlights the
community’s settlement
pattern from the flour mill boom of the late
19th century, two fires, which shaped the look
of the town today, and one of our most well-
known citizens, Colonel William Colvill, made
famous by the Battle of Gettysburg.

The First Minnesota
Volunteers, under the
leadership of Colonel
William Colvill, are
credited by many Civil
War historians with
saving the Battle of
Gettysburg. This local
hero and his wife,
Elizabeth, are buried in
the Cannon Falls Cemetery.

A statue and monument were placed at the
site in 1909 and President Calvin Coolidge
journeyed to Cannon Falls for the 1928
dedication. A replica of the statue can also be
seen at the State Capitol in St. Paul.

The Cannon Falls Cemetery is located along
Hwy. 19 on the eastern edge of Cannon Falls.

GOODHUE COUNTY HISTORY CENTER

The Goodhue County Historical Society is t
he oldest county historical society in Minnesota.
It was chartered in 1869. The Goodhue
County History Center is located in what
once was the Baptist Old People’s Home on
College Hill in Red Wing.

Points of Interest

HISTORIC DOWNTOWN CANNON FALLS

Cannon Falls has a wealth of buildings on the
Historic Register. In 2000, 29 buildings in the
downtown commercial district of Cannon Falls
were put on the National Register of Historic
Places. The district is an excellent example of
a small Midwestern agricultural service community
with most of the buildings constructed
in a period from 1880 to 1915.

VASA MUSEUM

PRESIDENT OBAMA PLAQUE

President Barack Obama made a historic
visit to Cannon Falls on August 15, 2011. A
plaque commemorating the visit is located
in Hannah’s Bend Park at the site where he
addressed the community.

Located near the Vasa Lutheran Church
(1869), this museum celebrates one of Minnesota’s
first Swedish-American settlements.
The building (1862), considered a center for
early Swedish culture, has been restored to its
1901 appearance. The Vasa Lutheran Church
was founded in 1855 by Eric Norelius, who
also founded Gustavus Adolphus College and
several other Swedish Lutheran churches in
the area. Norelius also helped to establish
Minnesota’s first orphanage (1865) in Vasa.
Norelius is buried beside the church.

The mural across the top of these pages is “People doing what they did,” a collection of photos
that gives a glimpse into the early days of Cannon Falls. This mural is located on the west wall

Cannon Falls Middle and High School students
ages 11 and up.

MEMORIAL DAY PARADE & CEREMONYMAY 27Cannon Falls supports and honors our
veterans! The Memorial Day Parade starts at
10:30am in downtown Cannon Falls and ends
on Hwy 19 E at the Cannon Falls Community
Cemetery. The memorial service will begin
at 11 am at the Colvill Memorial site. Cannon
Falls also has a Veterans Memorial at Two
Rivers Park on Hwy 20 N.

JUNE 19 | HANNAH’S BEND

It’s an old-fashioned fire muster! See vintage
and in-service fire apparatus of all makes and
models on display, along with water demos,
fire safety activities, swap meet, and food sold
on-site. This event is FREE and open to the
public. It is family-friendly so kids of all ages
are welcome.

CHAMBER FUN FEST

JUNE 13 | 4:30-7:30PM

This exciting street fair is held on Mill St.
between 4th St., and the Mill St. Bridge in
historic downtown Cannon Falls (pending hwy
construction). This Fest will have a variety of
demonstrations and merchandise like jewelry,
clothing, honey, candles, crafts, home-baked
goods, and even employment opportunities.
Live music, games, and concessions will also
be available.

Booth registrations will be available at
cannonfalls.org in April. There will be plenty
of space, but reserve your space early. The
registration deadline is May 31. Everyone is
invited to participate in this fun time! In case
of inclement weather, this event will be held
on June 23rd.

33rd Annual Golf Tournament and Fundraiser
will begin with a shot gun start at 12:30pm.

Tours will run about every 30 minutes and

CANNON VALLEY FAIR

JULY 3-6

This true “hometown” fair and 4th of July
celebration is jam-packed fun with horse
shows, bands, carnival rides and games, a
demo derby, truck pull, and harness racing.
4-H and open competitions and livestock
exhibits are included on the schedule.
The 2024 schedule will be posted at
cannonvalleyfair.org. Fireworks begin at dusk
on the 4th of July.

The parade route flows through town with

scheduled throughout the day. Santa and Mrs.

Cannon Falls throughout the day. Visit local
businesses to register for the prize drawings
during the Lighting of the Tree Ceremony.
Parade begins at 5pm followed by the Lighting
of the Tree Ceremony at 6pm. Caroling, hot
cider and a ceremony will be taking place
near the gazebo in the City Parking Lot. Don’t
leave yet! The fireworks are the finale. This
“Hallmark moment” is a spectacular way to
start the holiday season!

The Cannon Valley Trail is a paved hiking and
biking trail that runs 19.7 miles through diverse
and spectacular scenery on a former Chicago
Great Western Railroad line connecting the
cities of Cannon Falls, Welch and Red Wing in
beautiful southeastern Minnesota.

Paralleling the Cannon River, the trail offers
glimpses and panoramas of the valley and
overhanging cliffs and extensive wetlands.
Nature’s seasonal changes are vividly displayed.
The trail is open for bicycling, in-line
skating, skateboarding, hiking, walking and
cross-country activities.

A wheel pass is required for ages 18 and older
using wheels. Daily and seasonal passes are
available.

The trail is open daily from sunrise to 10pm.

Cannon Falls offers more than 30 acres of parks and recreational facilities…most of them
located along the Cannon River corridor and connected by the city’s paved recreational trail.
Various parks within the system are ideal for biking, skating, walking, picnicking, volleyball,
softball, disc golf and more. Playground equipment, restrooms and picnic shelters are available
at most parks within the system.

a large parking area. There is a direct connection
to the Cannon Valley Trail from the
parking lot.

The Cannon Falls Community Pool is open
June through August. Swimming lessons are
offered as well as open swim times, family
swim and water aerobics classes. The pool’s

Hours will be updated in the summer months.
Costs for 2020 are: Children 4 and under:
Free; Children 5-17: $2; Adults: $3.

The pool property is also home to a skate
park, which is open in spring, summer and
fall months. In the winter the property has an
ice-skating rink open to the public, weather
dependent.

The Cannon Falls dog park is located near
Archie Swenson Fields on Cannon River Ave.
The park features a fully fenced-in grassy
area for dogs to run and play. Dog Park rules
are posted. It is asked that dogs be licensed
with the City of Cannon Falls, licenses can
be obtained at City Hall, 918 River Road.

JOHN BURCH PARK

Corner of Hwy. 19 and 7th St. N.

John Burch Park is one of Cannon Falls’ most
recognizable parks with the large baseball
field that is home to the Cannon Falls Bombers
High School baseball team, Cannon Falls
Bears and various Legion and VFW teams
throughout the summer. The fall season sees
John Burch field transition to a football field
to host Bomber football games under the
lights. Another highlight of the park is the
band shell, which is occasionally used for
events during the summer and fall months.

Two Rivers Park is home to the Cannon Falls
Veteran’s Memorial. Visitors can also connect
to the Cannon Valley Trail and Mill Towns Trail
from Two Rivers Park as well as take in a view
of the Cannon River and Little Cannon River
as they meet here.
